Ethan's Golden Saturday

Age 4·Saturday adventures

What the parent wrote

“Ethan's favorite day is Saturday because that's adventure day. He and Mama and Dada ride bikes near the Golden Gate Bridge and watch the big ships go under. Then they go to Ocean Beach and he runs from the waves with his shoes off. After lunch they visit the penguins at SF Zoo — he always waves at them. In the afternoon they explore Golden Gate Park and he rides the carousel twice. At sunset they get ice cream and watch the fog roll in over the bridge. He falls asleep in the car dreaming about next Saturday.”

"SATURDAY!" Ethan's feet hit the floor before the sun was all the way up.

Three bikes. Three helmets. "Adventure day!" said Dada.

They pedaled along the water, the Golden Gate Bridge big and red and close.

A ship slid under the bridge — so slow, so huge. "Look how BIG!" whispered Ethan.

Ocean Beach! Ethan pulled off his shoes. The sand was cold and perfect.

A wave came close— "It's gonna get me!" He ran. It didn't get him. He ran back.

Lunch meant sitting close. Mama's arm around him. Ketchup on his chin.

At the zoo, the penguins stood in a line like they'd been waiting.

Ethan waved. One penguin waddled closer. "I think that one knows me," said Ethan.

Golden Gate Park smelled like trees and a little bit like rain.

The carousel horses went up and down and up and down. Ethan held on tight.

"Again!" The second ride was even better.

Strawberry ice cream. A sticky chin. The best kind of tired.

The fog crept in, soft and silver, rolling over the bridge like a blanket.

Ethan's eyes closed in the back seat. In his dreams, it was already Saturday.
