Grandpa's truck rumbled up before the sun was even finished rising. "Ready, buddy?" Liam grabbed his boots. "READY!"
They carried everything down the hill — tackle box, poles, and a brown paper bag that smelled like peanut butter.
Grandpa showed him how to cast. The line went whoooosh... plop. "Now we wait," said Grandpa.
They waited. And waited. And— "GRANDPA! GRANDPA, I GOT ONE!"
It was small and silver and it flipped in his hands. "My first fish," Liam whispered.
Grandpa smiled a faraway smile. "I caught my first fish right here on this dock. I was just about your size."
"You were little? Like ME?" Grandpa laughed. "Just like you."
Lunchtime. Grandpa opened the brown paper bag. Peanut butter and honey — cut corner to corner.
"My grandpa made me this same sandwich. Same spot. Same lake." Liam chewed and thought about that. A grandpa's grandpa.
After lunch they lay on the warm dock and watched the clouds go slow. "That one's a fish," said Liam. "That one's a sandwich," said Grandpa.
The afternoon turned gold. Then orange. Then the whole sky caught fire.
"Same colors," Grandpa said quietly. "Same sky. After all these years."
Liam looked up at him. "Grandpa? Was this your best day too?"
Grandpa squeezed him close. "You," he said, "are my best catch."
The truck rumbled home under the first stars. "Same lake next Saturday?" Liam whispered. "Same lake," said Grandpa. "Always."
